Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London) in London, was raised by the mother, her grandmother and her godparents. Her father was absent from her family. As a young girl, Catherine Ford struggled with an obsessive compulsive disorder and suffered from anxiety because of the word association. Ford's passion for acting started in her early years. She joined the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted to the Sylvia Young Theatre School. After just a few weeks, she realized it was not the right fit for her. Ford reapplied to Central School of Speech and Drama and, after her fourth attempt she was accepted. Shaun Dingwall - who later was the character Pete Tyler in Doctor Who - was one of her fellow students. Ford was graduated in 1993, but in the meantime she already had made her debut on television in a 1991 episode from Surgical Spirit; she adopted the name of her professional "Catherine Tate". Tate appeared in TV programmes including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly as well as London's Burning in the Nineties. Tate also regularly worked as a theatre actor and was eventually a part of in the Royal Shakespeare Company during its season between 2000 and 2001. Tate's stand-up comedy style and humour, which she added to her repertoire in 1996, soon gained her attention.
